General Summary | The Materials Handler I is responsible for stock handling, shipping, and receiving activities for contractors and WSSC Water employees. Duties include loading and unloading of materials; relocating stock in accordance with established procedures; preparing materials for issue; issuing materials and maintenance of the warehouse and the store yard areas; verifying incoming shipments, recording receipts and pertinent information in appropriate registers, filing all accompanying paperwork. |
Essential Functions | - Receives, inspects, and verifies completeness of incoming shipments against purchase orders and shipping papers; maintains shipping and receiving logs and registers
- Issues materials to contractors and WSSC Water employees, inputting material issue data into computer inventory system
- Investigates overages and shortages of stock, reporting results to Section Manager or designee
- Always operates within safety parameters
- Receives, stocks and properly classifies hazardous materials
- Rotates inventory and places newly received items on shelves or in the bulk area
- Ensures that goods to be shipped are correctly recorded, packaged and labeled
- Interacts frequently with employees, vendors, and contractors to address inquiries and resolve issues concerning receiving and shipping matters
- Prepares shipping manifest for deliveries within WSSC Water
- Participates in inventories and cycle counts
- Files move orders, contracts, registers, logs and receiving documentation along with other paperwork as required
- Operates a variety of warehouse equipment such as forklifts, hand carts and trucks
- Delivers materials to other warehouses and assists in loading and unloading
- Maintains the warehouse premises and/or store yard, and shipping and receiving area in a clean and orderly condition
- Substitutes at satellite warehouses
- Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business

Other Functions | - Assists other WSSC Water offices in resolving problems concerning receiving materials and stock related inquiries matters
- Performs other related duties as assigned

Work Environment And Physical Demands | - Industrial warehouse work environment.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor that includes the ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to stand and work on a concrete floor and/or outside in hot and cold weather for extended periods of time

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities | - Knowledge of standard warehousing and stockroom practices and procedures at both the main warehouse and satellite warehouses
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor such as lifting up to 50 pounds and relocating materials and supplies
- Skill in operating a variety of warehouse equipment including forklifts and hand carts
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with WSSC Water employees and contractors
- Ability to use a computerized inventory control system, and familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements | High School diploma or equivalent |
Additional Requirements | - Possession of a valid driver’s license with no more than 4 points and the ability to obtain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer
- Within 6 months obtain a WSSC Water E-1 equipment license; maintain license while in role
- Within 1 year of hire or transfer, successfully complete WSSC Water Equipment Training Program
- Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work

Preferences | - Experience working in a warehouse environment
- Experience performing stock handling, shipping, and receiving duties
- Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License
- DOT Medical Card Physical
