General Summary | The Chief Wastewater Pumping Station Operator supervises the day-to-day operations and maintenance of numerous wastewater pumping stations to ensure proper operations. This role also provides feedback to long range plans/improvements and provides input to newly built wastewater pumping stations. |
Essential Functions | - Supervises employees including selecting or recommending selection, training, assigning, and evaluating work, counseling, disciplining, and/or termination or recommending termination
- Plans, schedules, supervises, and reviews the preventive and corrective operational, mechanical, and electrical work of personnel, including but not limited to activities intended to avoid collection system disruptions and Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO) that could jeopardize the health and safety of the public and environment
- Participates in design reviews of new and /or the rehabilitation of existing facilities
- Plans, manages, supervises startups for new equipment and facilities
- Performs site visits to ensure operational and maintenance activities are accomplished and takes part in those activities to ensure they are completed
- Establishes operating standards and determines and prioritizes facility operational activities; provides general instructions to staff of pumping station operations to maintain proper operation of those facilities
- Assists in coordinating construction projects and implements measures to maintain proper operations during construction activities
- Prepares comprehensive reports on facility operations
- Supervises the maintenance of facility operations records
- Submits requisitions for chemicals, materials, tools, equipment and outside services as needed
- Develops budgetary estimates of facility needs and assists in preparation of the annual budget
- Provides mentoring, leadership, and training to operational staff
- Performs operation inspections of existing and new facilities to ensure equipment and processes operate properly and in accordance with specifications
- Responds to facility emergencies after hours as needed
- Promotes safe work practices and investigates accidents
- Coordinates deliveries and other goods and services that are needed for the operation and maintenance of the wastewater collection system operations
- Works closely with Chief Wastewater Plant Operators in the operations and maintenance of their facilities, and the effects of the pumping stations operations may have on them

Other Functions | - Acts as Subject Matter Expert in developing, training and evaluating the skills of staff as required
- Assists in the development and implementation of appropriate operator training programs, and conducts classes to improve operator knowledge, skills and abilities
- May be placed in the responsibility of Wastewater Treatment facilities in the absence of Chief Wastewater Plant Operators
- May be requested to coordinate and conduct tours of facilities and open house activities and interact with outside customers and public officials on matters related to the facilities
- As a member of the WSSC Water All Management Team the employee will participate in cross-Team committees established to support and advance both the WSSC Water Mission and Vision
- Performs other related duties as required

Work Environment And Physical Demands | - Must be able to work is in the presence of hazardous chemicals as defined by OSHA standards
- Must be able to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and elevated locations
- Ability to effectively utilize appropriate safety equipment and procedures
- Ability to demonstrate normal color perception, hear audible alarms and detect abnormal equipment sounds
- Ability to visually and physically inspect equipment and processes at any time of the day or night

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities | - Extensive knowledge of the machines, equipment, materials, and operating practices of wastewater pumping stations and associated collection system
- Demonstrated ability to organize and supervise team members and others engaged in operating wastewater pumping stations
- Ability to prioritize and coordinate operations and maintenance of the pumping station systems during severe emergency conditions
- Ability to effectively utilize appropriate safety equipment and procedures
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other groups, outside officials, employees and the public

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements | - High School diploma or equivalent
- 6+ years water/wastewater facility or system experience including:
- 3+ years of experience at the level of a lead role in the operation and/or maintenance of wastewater pumping stations or wastewater treatment systems (Such titles could include, but not limited to: Senior Operator, Facility Technician II-3, Operation & Maintenance Technician III-3, Lead Operator, Supervisor, Superintendent)

Additional Requirements | - Valid driver’s license with no more than 4 points and ability to obtain/maintain a WSSC Water driver’s permit
- Completion of the WSSC Water Financial Disclosure statement within 30 days of employment and annually thereafter
- Employees in this position are considered emergency personnel; therefore, employees are required to report to work as scheduled under all weather conditions
