Job Description

ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and vocational training in the mechanical and/or electrical field.

Experience

  • ELES Tech Helper C
    • One (1) year of previous mechanical helper experience, preferably in the elevator/escalator industry .
  • Twelve (12) months after the achievement a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical test(s) and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

Certification/Licensure

  • Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia motor vehicle operator’s license issued from jurisdiction of residence.

Preferred

  • Technical Certification or License such as Automotive ASE, MSE, HVAC License, Electronics Technician

Mission Essential Designation:

  • In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

Summary

This is an entry-level position in the office of Elevator/Escalator. The ELES Technician Helper is responsible for assisting the elevator/escalator journeyman, in performing maintenance and repair work. Under the direct supervision of an ELES journeyman, this role will work in WMATA facilities and field locations to handle all normal aspects of the job using all standards, approaches, methods, procedures, tools and equipment.

Job Levels : At each successive grade level of the job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

Essential Functions

  • Assist the ELES Journeyman in troubleshooting, repair and installation of a variety of elevator/escalator systems.
  • Assists ELES Journeymen, and/or Master Tech in the replacement or installation of elevator/escalator components and fixtures.
  • Assists in the repair and overhaul of defective components by operating devices to test performance, lubricating and cleaning components and equipment. Makes adjustments to functional components, devices and control equipment as directed.
  • Dismantles elevator/escalator units under guidance of the journeyman to gain access to and remove defective parts, using hoists, ladders and hand and/or power tools.
  • Assist the journeyman in responding to equipment trouble reports, repairing and restoring the elevator/escalator equipment to serviceable status.
  • Performs duties in compliance with established safety rules and regulations.

Other Functions

  • Follows established ethical practices, laws and codes in completing assignments.
  • Performs assignments according to established maintenance and safety rules, regulations and procedures. Adheres to codes established by the National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities (NAESA) and ANSI/ASME.
  • Operates an Authority vehicle as required.
  • Attends on-the-job, safety and formal training classes.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area.
  • Works variable days, shifts and hours as required.
