Job DescriptionTHIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF. ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively. Minimum Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma or possession of a general equivalency diploma (GED)
Experience
  • A minimum of six (6) years’ experience performing the duties of a Garage Mechanic, or related field
Certification/Licensure
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and WMATA certification tests
  • ASE Transit Bus certification of H2, H6, H7 and H8 or, grandfathered employees must have passed the required type and number of internal tests. Must also have all required internal certifications
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper Passenger, Air Brakes, and Tow truck operations endorsements or, must acquire a CDL with Passenger, Air Brakes, and Tow Truck operations endorsements by the completion of training

Job SummaryThe Garage HVAC Lead Mechanic is highly skilled in technical vehicle maintenance and repair work. The day to day focus involves troubleshooting, vehicle disassembly, repair, assembly and/or installation of heat, ventilation air conditioning (HVAC), and related components for the bus and automotive fleet. The incumbent ensures group work assignments are properly initiated and completed within Authority guidelines and regulated industry standards. Essential Functions
  • Diagnoses causes of problems and/or failures in heating/air conditioning systems for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems repair and/or replacement needs.
  • Fabricates equipment parts for the purpose of meeting specialty needs and/or replacing unavailable parts.
  • Inspects HVAC systems and their components (e.g., heating units, building exhaust fans, and ventilation units) for the purpose of evaluating condition, identifying necessary repairs, and recommending preventive maintenance.
  • Installs heating and air conditioning equipment and systems for the purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded capabilities.
  • Maintains vehicle, tools, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability of safe operating condition.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars, as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering informtion required to perform job functions.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance as needed for the purpose of ensuring the ongoing functioning of HVAC systems.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g., repair status, and activitiy logs) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.
  • Operates Washington Matropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)’s vehicles as required.
  • Repairs heating and air conditioning systems and/or components (e.g., pumps, motors, air handlers, fan coils, and piping) for the purpose of ensuring a comfortable work environment.
  • Provides on-the-job training for mechanics in lower classifications.
  • Responds to, and provides assistance in, emergencies or incidents such as emergency snow conditions.
  • Reviews completed work to ensure that supervisor's instructions have been met.
