Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.
SummaryThe janitor is responsible for cleaning rail stations and support facility offices. Work responsibilities include cleaning rail station platforms, elevator interiors, escalator panels, and public restrooms; and cleaning support offices and restrooms. The janitor cleans exterior areas of rail stations and support facilities, including sidewalks, ramps, dome tops and bus bays/loops. Janitors are also responsible for systemwide cleaning of biohazardous waste in rail stations and support facilities. Essential Functions
  • Cleans interiors of rail stations, support facility offices, and other designated areas in accordance with Authority (WMATA) requirements and industry best practices. Removes trash and debris; sweeps, mops, and strips floors; vacuums and operates floor waxer to buff, wax and polish floors. Cleans ceilings, walls, doors, vents, glass, furniture, overhead fixtures; cleans entire restrooms including the fixtures, walls, and floors, and re-stocks restrooms.
  • Cleans and organizes cleaner's rooms and storage supply rooms. Organizes boxes, material, hand trucks or other industrial equipment in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Cleans exterior areas of rail stations and support facilities, including bus shelters/windscreens, rail station shelters, bus lanes and bus loop shelters, garages, parking lots, ramps, sidewalks and cigarette ash trays.
  • Performs special tasks such as removing graffiti and gum, cleaning elevator interiors and escalator panels, cleaning up bodily fluids and disposing of biohazardous waste. Supports WMATA’s emergency response efforts during operational emergencies and severe weather events. Operates snow removal machines and other required equipment/tools during severe weather events
Other Functions
  • Performs tasks and assignments according to WMATA’s established safety practices and maintenance guidelines and attends required training classes.
  • Provides helpful, correct information to patrons when they ask for it.
