UIC is seeking a Senior Accessibility Engineer to join our Technology Solutions team. This role will lead the development and maintenance of accessible serverless web applications on cloud platforms. This role involves implementing innovative custom AI integrations to enhance accessibility features and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to embed accessibility standards throughout the project lifecycle.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain serverless accessible web applications on AWS/GCP/Azure using React, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL.
- Implement custom AI integrations using Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Amazon Nova, and DeepSeek to enhance accessibility features.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accessibility standards are met across all projects.
- Conduct comprehensive accessibility audits and provide recommendations for improvements
- Stay updated with the latest accessibility guidelines and best practices, including WCAG 2.1 and WCAG 2.2
- Develop and deliver training materials and workshops on digital accessibility for developers, designers, and content creators
- Mentor junior engineers and guide accessibility-related projects.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study
- Minimum 5 years of professional IT experience within IT Development which includes demonstrated experience in developing and/or modifying new and existing applications, including requirement analysis, design, code, test, debug, implementation and maintenance.
- Demonstrated knowledge of cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, Azure, and Digital Ocean.
- Demonstrated knowledge of developing accessible web applications and platforms.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong programming skills in TypeScript, JavaScript, Node.js, Python, and Rust.
- Experience with frameworks like React, React Native, Expo, Svelte, Angular, WordPress, GraphQL, Hasura, and AWS Amplify.
- Knowledge of data structure, including PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, MySQL, and MongoDB.
- Experience with open-source web accessibility platforms.
- Familiarity with AI-powered tools and workflows.
- Contributions to accessibility-related projects and initiatives.
- Solid understanding of accessibility standards, guidelines, and best practices, including WCAG, ADA, and Section 508
