I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:	The Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) is the intellectual and creative backbone of the university, a place where the arts, the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences come together to form a nexus of ideas and opportunity. Columbian College’s doctoral, master’s and graduate certificate programs offer a transformative experience, connecting students with some of the most influential leaders and institutions while partnering with public and private organizations in the nation’s capital and around the globe. Our graduate students are prepared for academic and professional advancement through an education steeped in rigorous scholarship and practical application. The CCAS Graduate Student Services office is seeking a Senior Student Services Specialist who serves as a point of contact for faculty, staff, and students throughout their life-cycle. The coordinator has responsibility for a portfolio of approximately 600 graduate students. Primary responsibilities include advising students on academic processes and policy, assisting in registration, graduate clearances, and exception requests. The Students Services Specialist will also be cross-trained in graduate admissions and may assist the admissions team as necessary. This role is typically responsible for advising students on registration, graduation, and exception requests, advising faculty and staff on university policies and procedures, and reviewing and auditing student records. This position also typically researches and evaluates unusual or complex problems and requests, liaises with other GW contacts as needed, and provides effective solutions. This role often determines eligibility for graduation. Responsibilities: Graduate Student Services Advise students on registration, graduation, exception requests and academic standing. Counsel students on University and CCAS policies and procedures. Advise faculty of CCAS and University policies and procedures. Train faculty on new procedures and technologies as they are initiated into the College. Review and audit students’ academic records and track degree progress. Make recommendations regarding academic standing. Process CCAS and University forms. Advise the Associate Dean and/or faculty advisor when a students’ record indicates a need for action. During seasonal peaks, assist the admissions teams in the preparation and processing of graduate admission applications. Evaluate applications for completeness, eligibility, prepare applications for review. Plan and participate in events including, but not limited to, student orientation, the GW Doctoral Hooding Ceremony, CCAS Celebration and University Commencement and admitted student days. Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:	Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:	Experience in academic advising or student services, preferably in a graduate education setting, with demonstrated knowledge of university policies and procedures. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage a large student portfolio and resolve complex academic or administrative issues. Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, including experience working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students, and supporting events such as orientation and graduation.
