Job Description Summary: | Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Campus Safety, the Chief of Police for the George Washington University Police Department (GWPD) administers the university police department and provides essential law enforcement and security services to members of the university community and visitors. This position advises university leadership regarding university-wide strategies to prevent crime and enhance the safety, security, and well-being of the university community. The Chief directs departmental operations and supervises all departmental employees, including approximately 53 sworn police officers and supervisors. The Chief leads GWPD’s compliance with campus crime reporting requirements, inclusive of the Jeanne Clery Act and collaborates with campus partners on that process as well as others such as threat assessment. Of note, Washington, D.C. is a complex law enforcement environment that includes the Metropolitan Police Department, which has local jurisdiction, Metro Transit Police, other university police departments (connected through the local Consortium of Universities), and 32 distinct federal law enforcement agencies. Moreover, GW’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus is in the Loudoun County Sheriff’s jurisdiction. Success here requires eager partnership and collaboration. Minimum Qualifications: | Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. |
