I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The Division for Student Affairs (DSA) engages and encourages student learning by creating and fostering communities that promote personal development. The Center for Interfaith and Spiritual Life will foster and support the diverse religious and spiritual needs of the George Washington University community, promoting interfaith dialogue, understanding, and cooperation.

George Washington University seeks a dynamic and innovative leader to serve as the University Chaplain. This is a unique opportunity to foster a welcoming and inclusive space for students, faculty, and staff on a secular campus to explore their religious and spiritual identities, engage in interfaith dialogue, and navigate ethical challenges. The University Chaplain will play a pivotal role in shaping a vibrant and diverse community that respects and celebrates all individual journeys of meaning and purpose.

Responsibilities:
● Leadership and Vision:
  • Oversee the Center for Interfaith and Spiritual Life, providing strategic direction and leadership.
  • Develop a comprehensive multi-faith chaplaincy program reflecting the GW community’s diversity and leveraging Washington, D.C.’s interfaith resources.
  • Collaborate with the Council of Chaplains to create a welcoming and inclusive space for all spiritual and religious practices.
● Interfaith Engagement:
  • Lead and participate in interfaith dialogue initiatives, fostering understanding and collaboration among diverse religious communities.
  • Organize and host interfaith events and programs, building bridges between different faith traditions.
  • Collaborate with faculty and student organizations to integrate interfaith learning into the curriculum and co-curricular activities.
● Pastoral Care and Support:
  • Provide confidential spiritual guidance and support to students, faculty, and staff of all faiths and backgrounds.
  • Be present during times of crisis, offering comfort and support through individual counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Partner with GW Medical Enterprise to provide pastoral care at GW MFA and the GW Hospital.
● University Community:
  • Build strong relationships with university staff, faculty, and administrators, collaborating on initiatives that promote inclusivity and well-being.
  • Collaborate with Development and Alumni Relations to secure funding for the Center and its programs.
  • Represent the Center and GW in interfaith dialogues and partnerships within the Washington, D.C. community.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Vice Provost.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, Master’s degree, or higher, in a relevant area of study preferred. Relevant experience must include at least 2 years of senior leadership/executive level experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years experience in chaplaincy or pastoral care, preferably in a university setting.
  • Doctoral degree in ministry, divinity, religious studies, or related field.
  • Leadership experience within religious communities or other organizations.
  • Proficiency in additional languages spoken by the GW community.
  • Experience navigating the complexities of a secular public university environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to interfaith dialogue and inclusivity.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity.
