Primary Purpose

The Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for planning and executing executive thought leadership and community communications programs and activities as needed by the Manager of Communications or Director of Communications. The Specialist serves as a point of contact for Corporate and Community Impact (CCI) communications and works in or with the business units to coordinate content, guidelines, and implementation, and to ensure consistent messaging and corporate identity. Responsibilities include media relations, interaction with advertising/marketing vendors and community outreach.


Primary Duties

  • Ensure effective communication of company goals and initiatives to internal and external stakeholders (25%)
  • Support and participate in the development and implementation of internal and external communications programs and initiatives. (25%)
  • Manage a variety of internal and community communications tasks to support leadership, including preparation of a range of communications publications, talking points, presentations, and other materials. (20%)
  • Develop strong working relationships with other business units, local press, and community officials, as needed, to broaden reach and proactively share PHI’s story. (25%)
  • Coordinate media outreach initiatives as needed. (5%)

Job Scope

  • Position activities are focused on thought leadership and community communications to employees and external stakeholders that support initiatives and projects developed by corporate communications and business unit organizations.
  • Develop and execute integrated communications strategies to reinforce Pepco Holdings' role as a trusted community partner within our regions, leading to enhanced brand reputation and increased awareness of our community support by customers and stakeholders.
  • Position PHI as a forward-thinking anchor institution with a strong focus on storytelling that underscores our commitment to building more vibrant and equitable communities.
  • Serve as the primary communications lead for CCI, partnering with key internal partners to amplify initiatives that support PHI’s core values, corporate commitments, and community investments, including workforce development programs, philanthropic partnerships, and economic development initiatives.
  • Oversee thought leadership content development, leveraging the human voices behind PHI to tell the story of our impact to build trust, transparency, and engagement across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Requires significant outreach to internal and external audiences and development of strong relationships.
  • Collaborate vendor/agency relationships in the development of collateral and the execution of projects.
  • Involves proactive communication planning and plan execution, project leadership and a high level of coordination with other communication functions.
  • Requires ability to develop communications strategies.
  • Requires ability to travel.
  • Works under minimal supervision.
  • Directly supports the Manager, Communications, or Director, Communications, as needed.
  • Rotating on-call storm and social media role.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4-year relevant degree and 4-7 years' experience in communications (media relations, employee communications or advertising).
  • Proven, excellent communications skills, both written and interpersonal.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to be innovative and creative
  • Ability to work autonomously and interface easily with senior business leaders and the local press.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising, or related field
  • Energy business/industry knowledge

  • Annual salary will vary based on a candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, and other factors: $76,000.00/Yr. – $104,500.00/Yr.
