Minimum Qualifications One year of experience* in the operation and / or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility. In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR
One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR
An Associate’s or higher-level degree, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR
Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
Duties Description Under higher-level supervision, the incumbent will perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks related to the operation and maintenance of Cayuga Lake State Park, with a primary focus on plumbing systems. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Automotive: Performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on park vehicles and equipment, such as oil changes, brade adjustments, and replacing parts.
• Carpentry: Constructing, repairing, and maintaining wooden structures.
• Plumbing: Installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing systems, including water lines, fixtures, and valves.
• Electrical: Assisting in the repair and maintenance of electrical systems, including lighting, wiring, and electrical fixtures.
• Painting: Preparing surfaces and applying paint or other finishes to maintain and enhance park facilities.
Additional responsibilities include:
• Supervising, training, assigning and reviewing the work of lower-level employees.
• Maintaining drinking water systems and ensuring compliance with the Department of Health guidelines.
o Conducting water testing and sampling.
o Turning on water systems across the park, including campgrounds, bathrooms, shelters, and spigots.
o Entering and working in confined spaces to charge water systems.
o Inspecting and ensuring the proper functioning of toilets, sinks, showers, spigots, and water heaters within the campgrounds and facilities.
o Checking for leaks and performing repairs.
o Shutting down and draining water systems, including supply lines and outdoor fixtures, and ensuring systems are winterized for the off-season.
o Performing water sampling.
o Managing inventory of supplies needed and purchasing necessary items compliance with New York State purchasing guidelines.
• Operating various equipment, including:
o Chainsaws
o Sanders
o Mowers
o Grounds maintenance equipment
o Tractors
o Snowplows
o Dump trucks
• Performing light security tasks as needed
• Frequently working independently with minimal direct supervision.
• Following written directions and recording and documenting required information.
• Communicating effectively with staff and patrons.
Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must obtain a valid Grade “D” Water Operator’s Certification within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy manual labor and have the ability to operate equipment and power tools.
• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must have completed Game of Logging within the probationary period as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and have knowledge of good safety practices.
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays as needed.
