Minimum Qualifications •Three to five years’ experience as a Legislative Director or comparable job
•Extensive experience with the New York State legislative process
•Proficient knowledge of LRS, Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Suite
•Strong organization and communication skills as well as strong attention to detail
•Experience managing people and projects
•Critical and creative thinker, problem solver and self-starter
•Strong note-taker
•Bachelor’s degree required
•A law degree is preferred but not required

Duties Description The Legislative Director is a member of the Senator’s senior staff and serves as the lead staff-level communicator between the Senator and Senate Counsel and Finance. This person manages the Senator’s legislative team and is responsible for overseeing the development and execution of the Senator’s budget and legislative priorities.

This position is a key part of the Senator’s leadership team and is often responsible for representing the Senator at meetings with other government staff and internal and external stakeholders and is required to remain professional and knowledgeable when discussing matters related to the Senator’s legislative agenda.

The Legislative Director will also assist the Senator in executing her legislative responsibilities as Chair of the Senate Agriculture and Food Committee and work in conjunction with Agriculture central staff to prepare committee agendas.

This position represents an opportunity for an individual to succeed in helping to advance a robust and progressive policy agenda and is ideally suited for a hard-worker who is superbly organized, has a strong attention to detail, can juggle multiple tasks and thrives in a fast-paced environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

•Manage the Legislative Team
•Perform research and draft legislation
•Organize a budget tracking system of the Senator’s local and statewide funding and policy priorities
•Manage recommendations for committee and floor votes, as well as requests for sign-on letters
•Attend meetings with and on behalf of the Senator
•Effectively communicate with senior staff and district office staff
•Work with the Communications Director to help draft communication products and other speaking materials for session, interviews and speeches
•Oversee the Agriculture and Food Committee portfolio
•Maintain relationships and effective communication channels with Senate Counsel and Finance and external stakeholders
•Awareness of constituent services casework to develop possible legislative solutions to local concerns and issues
•Occasional travel as needed
