These titles are part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY Helps) and applicants must meet the following Minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:

Plant Utilities Assistant:
One year of satisfactory hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of boilers and/or auxiliary equipment or HVAC equipment in commercial, industrial or institutional facilities.
An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience.

Plant Utilities Engineer 1:
Two years of hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of boilers and/or auxiliary equipment or HVAC equipment in commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities (experience limited to residential applications is NOT considered qualifying) AND an associate degree in Plant Utilities Technology or the equivalent.
An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor’s in a related field degree can substitute for four years of experience; a master’s degree in a related field can substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for six years of experience.

Duties Description A Plant Utilities Assistant will be responsible for the operation, repair, and maintenance of equipment and systems including pumps, high temperature hot water generators, high temperature hot water boilers and auxiliary heating system equipment. The operation, repair and routine maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical distribution is also included.

A Plant Utilities Engineer 1 will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, testing and calibration of mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical distribution in a safe and efficient manner. The successful candidate will also be expected to make appropriate recommendations on major overhauls and replacement of equipment, as well as identify, recommend, and develop energy conservation projects. The ordering of necessary parts for all jobs related to heating and ventilation is also included. This position is also expected to effectively train Plant Utilities Assistants (PUAs) while on shift and in field and acts as watch engineer and shift leader when required. The successful candidate may also supervise contractors in an emergency or project situation and may be required to assume responsibility for operations of the overall physical plant at times.

Additional Comments The Central Heating Plant maintains all heating, air conditioning, hot water, ventilation, and refrigeration services as well as overseeing the proper functioning of all elevators on campus. We also answer after hours calls and provide service, as needed, and are a 24/7 operation. We are a part of the Administration & Finance division which provides essential services to our campus, local, state, federal and international customers. We are responsible for human, physical, financial and technical resources. As professionals, we navigate systems in a collaborative and sensitive way to assist the University in achieving its educational mission.
