Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal from employment.

Duties Description Maintenance Assistants perform a variety of semiskilled repairs and related activities at the Residency, Sub-yards and at the LIWC for the proper operation, maintenance and repair of buildings and facility equipment.

The following tasks include plumbing, welding, carpentry, interior and exterior painting, masonry repairs, electrical work including repairing electrical equipment, computer operations, installation of roofing materials, operation, and maintenance of heating and hot water equipment.

Maintenance Assistants assist Regional General Mechanic in facility maintenance projects. They also coordinate contractor provided services, order supplies, use computer to research and purchase products, and perform special tasks as assigned.

The maintenance and operation work of the LIWC covers the following items: interactive kiosks and video screens building management system (BMS) controlled units including gas boilers, pumps, water heaters and variable air handlers; lighting including computerized lighting controllers and solar powered parking lot lamps; fire detection system; automated public entrance/exit doors and rollup garage door; irrigation sprinkler system; and a 150 KW natural gas emergency generator.

The selected candidate must be able to respond to emergency call outs and respond within one (1) hour of being called.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
