Minimum Qualifications One year of experience in maintenance, construction, landscaping, business operations, park operations, or in an organized recreation program.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Associates or Bachelor’s degree in biological/environmental sciences, natural resource management, or a related field.
• Sustainable trail design/construction, plant ID, natural history skills, and a working knowledge of GIS are desired. Experience with trail design, maintenance, and grant applications.
• Experience with environmental outreach, civic engagement, and coordination of volunteer programs.
If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
Duties Description The Trails Crew Coordinator is a long-term seasonal position that will assist the Thousand Islands Region of New York State Parks in coordinating the Trails program and work of summer conservation crews.
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Writes grants, designs projects, and directly oversees the trails summer trails crew in the construction and restoration of various facilities across the region.
• Recruit and supervise the summer trails crew on both one-day projects and long term projects (i.e. trail rehabilitation, protection and restoration of natural resources).
• Meets with park managers and staff to discuss potential trail projects, project prioritization, collaborates with agency partners, researches park-side protocol and feasibility for implementation of projects, and provides supervision, assistance, and leadership for projects.
• Applies sustainable trail building knowledge to directly lead the efforts of the regional trail crew on hiking trail projects in parks throughout the Thousand Islands Region.
• Schedules summer conservation projects and crews (both paid and volunteer) working on the projects.
• Other duties as assigned.
Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must be able to work a variable schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess or be able to obtain CPR, First Aid, and Game of Logging 1, 2, and 3 or equivalent training within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. Training will be provided by the Thousand Islands regional office.
• Must be willing to work in a variety of weather conditions and perform physically demanding field work, including hiking five or more miles per day, and lifting.
