Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree and three years of professional experience in the interpretation of art objects and one of the following: acquisition, cataloging, care, or conservation of art objects in a museum or an organization having an art collection. This experience must include the development, administration, and supervision of tours of art collections, historic houses, or historic sites.

Substitution:
A bachelor’s degree in gallery management, museum studies, art history, public history, or education may substitute for one year of experience; a master’s degree in the above fields may substitute for an additional year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Vast knowledge of American and New York history, with reference to social, cultural, military, and the history of political developments as they relate to the collection and care of artifacts and objects reflecting such developments in New York State.

Duties Description The specific focus of this position is on history, historic collections, New York history, as well as fine-art and furnishings.

• Oversees maintenance of insurance and financial records, schedules, resources, and photographic documentation.
• Assists the Manager Curatorial & Visitor Services with the stewardship of historic collections, the design and installation of exhibits, audiovisual programs and special events, monitors artwork, historic objects.
• Recommends methods of display and provided historical context for guided tours to determine which processes require change, actions that will improve the program, and enhance the visitor experience.
• Assist in the conservation and preservation of paintings, sculptures, and historic objects by monitoring condition, noting damage or deterioration. Research available methods and costs of repair and renovation and prepare contacts for the maintenance and renovation.
• Performs site-work and research at the Executive Mansion involving location, identification, and assessment of historic artifacts, furnishings, and objects of historic and/or aesthetic interest or significance, including location and study of documents related to collections, exhibits and historic restorations of items.
• Exhibition development, loan processing and curation of collections.
• Occasionally compose and deliver lectures, write articles and releases for press and publication.
• Prepare and lead special historic tours.
• Correspond to inquiries regarding historical background and context, press inquiries and assists the PIO with inquires related to historical background, and otherwise engages in educational and informational activities related to the assigned field(s).
• Develops new Capitol tours and programs. Possible examples: Hall of Governor’s Tour, Roosevelt Tour, “Million Dollar” Staircase Tour.
• Requirement, assist with interviewing and hiring in the department.
• Perform a full range of supervisory duties.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
