Candidates must be reachable for appointment from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list for this title.

Medical Technologist 1 is a continuous recruitment examination. Candidates who are not on the eligible list may apply for this position by submitting a New York State Application and Supplement (20-195) (https://www.cs.ny.gov/extdocs/pdf/20-195.pdf) for scoring to the
Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research.

The minimum qualifications for a Medical Technologist 1 are:

Possession of a valid New York State license, issued by the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions, as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist

AND

1. Bachelor's degree in medical technology;

OR

2. Minimum of 90 semester hours or equivalent in an accredited college or university AND the successful completion of a course of training of at least 12 months in a school of medical technology approved by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association;

OR

3. Bachelor's degree in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences AND one year of training and/or experience in medical technology;

OR

4. Any combination of academic study and training and/or experience outlined in Section 58 of Title 10 of the New York State Public Health Law as referenced in the New York State Codes, Rules, and Regulations (NYCRR).

As a Medical Technologist 1, you would perform the more specialized and complex chemical, physical and microscopic procedures and tests on specimens of blood, sputum, urine, spinal fluids and tissues. These tests and procedures may include but are not limited to hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, clinical chemistry, serology, microbiology, drugs-of-abuse screening/confirmation, therapeutic drugs analysis, and special chemistry. Under supervision, you may carry out developmental studies and research in production of standard reagents and methodologies. You may develop new laboratory techniques, implement new or modified procedures and prepare statistical reports. You may supervise technical and non-technical employees and train personnel in technical procedures. You may check completed work for accuracy and for conformance to standards, correcting and retraining where necessary; prepare work schedules; inform personnel of rules, regulations and other communications; and evaluate employee performance. You may maintain the quality control program and you may perform maintenance and minor repair of equipment.

Background Investigation Requirements:
Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC) which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.

There are 6 positions available, all are day shift positions.

Day Shift position and an occasional Saturday commitment may be possible.
