About the role

As owners of Wales and England’s electricity transmission network we are responsible for the decarbonisation of the energy system. This is an essential part of the country’s Net Zero journey, and in order to make it happen we need to successfully deliver a portfolio of new, infrastructure projects. These projects are often between £10m and £250m, building new and redeveloped substations and upgrading overhead lines and cables.

As Commercial Strategy Lead, as part of the Infrastructure Delivery (ID) team, you’ll be responsible for defining and implementing the commercial strategy for the delivery of major electricity transmission infrastructure projects. You’ll drive the contractual and commercial frameworks, developing default budget and risk principles for capital schemes, ensuring the robustness of the supply chain capability to ensure we obtain value for money.

With broad accountability, you’ll develop contract strategy, work closely with other stakeholders to define individual contract strategies tailored to the needs of the projects/programmes, ensuring value for money.

In addition, you’ll develop the governance framework relating to contractors and suppliers to facilitate risk tracking and monitoring of the full supply chain. With great competition for resources and equipment, you’ll need to develop innovative approaches and contract mechanisms to ensure that we have access to the contract resource we need to build the network that will help deliver a net zero energy network for the UK.

We’re flexible on where you’re based, and the role will offer a mix of office and home working, with travel to various sites to interact with Project Directors.

What you'll need

Having previously worked on large scale capex infrastructure projects, you’ll have experience in a commercial or procurement role within a corporate environment. You’ll have experience of strategic supply chain management within a regulated environment and an in-depth understanding of contract management, including risk management. Knowledge and experience of energy utilities and Utility Contract Regulations would be beneficial.

You’ll have sound knowledge and direct experience of construction contracts, NEC4 contract frameworks and experience of strategic supply chain management.

Strong commercial acumen, highly analytical and numerate, you’ll also have strong influencing, persuasion, communication and interpersonal skills.
