Project Supervisor
National Grid
About the role
The UK has set out its ambition to be net zero by 2050 and the energy industry is responding – together we are building a cleaner, greener Britain.
To supervise nationally significant green energy projects
You’ll be working on projects in North West England/ borders region. The projects are in their early development stages and initially you’ll work across two of them. Later on, once we’re in construction, you’ll be allocated to a specific project. You’ll be involved in all phases of the project lifecycle, from the development of designs and surveys though to construction, delivery and commissioning.
It will be your job to ensure contractors work to agreed specifications and safety and quality standards. You’ll be feeding back on progress to the Project Manager, acting as an intermediary between contractors and the project management team.
We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
About you
What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential. That’s why we look to recruit experts in their field. In this case, we’re looking for someone who:
- You are personable, calm, and good at diffusing potentially challenging situations. You are detail orientated, particularly with regards to safety. You act as a safety leader, empowering colleagues rather than criticising.
- You don’t need a degree or any formal qualifications, experience is much more important. Construction experience is absolutely essential, as is the enthusiasm for working outdoors and in a construction environment.
- Ideally you have experienced a variety of activities on site, such as lifting or working at height, with a strong emphasis on construction safety. Ideally you have an understanding of National Grid safety rules too. Experience of the power industry with an understanding of associated assets would be highly desirable.
- You have the flexibility to travel as required. You can expect to be on the road most days, with some overnight stays.
Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At National Grid, we’re committed to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace for everyone. So if you’re excited about this role but your experience or qualifications don’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might just be the right person for our growing business in this role or another one.
What you'll do
- Ensuring safety is always your number one priority. As an organisation we are driven by safety and have an industry leading ‘Safe to Say’ policy which encourages colleagues to speak up and take ownership of safety issues. You will help foster an environment where everyone, regardless of seniority, feels able to share their concerns.
- Taking care of the crucial safety details. Including checking PPE, ensuring people have the right tools for the job, are working safely and have the appropriate access.
- Understanding and applying safety legislation and the 2015 CDM regulations.
- Setting contractors to work safely and to spec.
- Working with the appropriately authorised colleague, i.e. the Senior Authorised Person, to look after general site safety, whilst they look after safety from the system.
- Reviewing contractors’ RAMS, along with the Senior Authorised Person.
- Completing safety audits to ensure contractors are compliant with RAMS and National Grid safety rules.
- Using your experience of being on construction sites to identify when something isn’t right or safe, and making the necessary changes.
- Ensuring planned activities are completed safely. For example, if a contractor is bringing a crane onto site, ensuring it is done so safely and appropriately, with mitigated risks.
- Sharing all safety information clearly, consistently and effectively across your site.
- Ensuring all incidents, near misses and accidents are reported correctly and appropriate investigations carried out.
- Supervising works and ensuring they are completed to the right standard, whether it’s surveys, system access for an outage, concrete pouring, mechanical electrical fitting, or commissioning assets.
- Liaising between the contractor and National Grid employees on site.
- Ensuring that contractors are checking their own work to the appropriate standard.
- Being proactively involved in supervising all phases of development and construction, including surveys, ground investigations, earthworks, civils, mechanical and electrical, and commissioning.
- Quickly developing a high level of expertise about our assets and how they are built.
- Acting as the named supervisor on contracts and having the appropriate duties assigned to you.
- Being involved in early warning notices, making sure contractors are fair and honest.
- Applying your knowledge of the construction industry during compensation events to ascertain whether contractors’ claims are reasonable. Also providing alternatives or identifying why contractors should have told us about certain events sooner.
- Undertaking commercial assessments and review programmes.
- Building strong working relationships with stakeholders, including contractors, sub-contractors, National Grid project teams and local site teams.
- Acting as the main intermediary between contractors and National Grid, particularly the Project Manager or authorised safety personnel.
- Coordinating multiple tiers of contractors and acting as the communication point for everyone. It will be your responsibility to know who is doing what and when across your site. Conducting site tours.
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £45,000 - £54,000 – dependent on capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
