National Grid is hiring a Senior Environmental Engineer, Environment and Sustainability in North Andover, MA
This is a Hybrid Role - Must live within a commutable distance to our locations
Job Purpose
Conduct activities to ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulatory requirements, and to advance the overall environmental policy of National Grid.

Key Accountabilities
The Senior Environmental Scientist/Engineer in an Environmental Compliance role is responsible for overseeing National Grid's programs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.
Environmental Compliance Program
- Conduct periodic inspections of operating yards, service centers, gas plants, fleet garages and other company properties to ensure compliance with Federal, State and Local environmental regulations. Inspections will include assessment of waste storage areas, bulk chemical and petroleum tanks, emergency generators, etc.
- Assist / support operating organizations with compliance activities; ensure all identified issues are promptly addressed.
- Act as regulatory liaison and provide onsite presence during regulatory agency environmental inspections.
- Respond to Notices of Violation (NOVs) or similar assertions of non-compliance and initiate corrective action and official response.
- Train employees involved in day-to-day waste handling or others that have the potential to impact the environment.
- Support the company's ISO 14001 Certification by preparing operations and participating in internal and external program audits.
- Oversee the activities of environmental consultants and contractors, ensuring that their work meets regulatory requirements and Company environmental standards
- Maintain purchase orders and contracts and review and process invoices for waste services, emergency response vendors, environmental consultants, disposal sites, and laboratories.
- Managing processes and programs to develop and submit all required compliance reports to applicable regulatory agencies.
Operations & Facility Support
- Assist in arranging for waste transportation and disposal from company locations or field locations.
- Determine classification of wastes (i.e. hazardous, universal, regulated, etc.) routinely generated. Coordinate material sampling and laboratory analysis to determine waste profile and disposal options.
- Manage PCB gas pipe abandonment and pipe collection and decontamination processes
- Manage and coordinate hazardous materials building assessments
- Manage the assessment and remediation of contaminated sites for gas and electric operations capital projects in accordance with the MCP and U.S. EPA requirements
- Coordinate and Oversee Phase I & Phase II Environmental Site Assessments for property transactions
- Spill Response & Cleanup
- Manage environmental response activities to address oil and/or hazardous materials spills. Includes participation in a program that will require 24/7 response responsibilities on a rotating, on-call schedule. Coordinate response with operations and Federal, State and local authorities. Manage consultants and contractors in conducting spill response actions.
- Coordinate and oversee environmental site investigation and remediation activities.
- Ensure emergency and spill response plans, contingency plans, manifests, permits and approvals are accurate, up-to-date, and available as applicable.
- Participate in periodic emergency response training and drills.

Environmental Policy Support
- Participate in the selection and periodic review of disposal sites as part of the company's Vendor Advisory Group.
- Support the development and maintenance of environmental procedures and guidance documents.
- Support operations in development of operations-specific environmental related procedures.
- Lead or participate in environmental incident analyses.
- Track and participate in emerging laws and regulations discussions.
- Assist with the communication and implementation of regulatory changes impacting company operations.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in an environmental, applied science, or engineering related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or equivalent work experience.
- Strong communication skills for managing relationships with internal stakeholders, regulatory agencies, environmental consultants, and contractors.
- Expertise in MCP response actions, hazardous materials building assessment, U.S. EPA PCB regulations, air quality regulations, stormwater and industrial wastewater management, and wetlands regulations.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing environmental compliance strategies for construction and facility improvement projects.
- Proficient in relevant software e.g. SAP, Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Understanding of project management techniques and methods.
- Driver’s license and safe driving record

Salary
$103,000 - $121,000 a year
Salary commensurate with location and experience
This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills. Candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.
