About the role

Land Officer – Existing Infrastructure

Location: Home Based, National (With office hubs in Leeds, Warwick, Gloucester and The Strand, London)
Ideal location would be in the South West, however it's a National Team therefore we're happy to accept applications from within England and Wales.

Great Britain’s electricity infrastructure is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

We are at the forefront of the biggest period of change in the electricity network since the 1960s to meet the demands of Net Zero; upgrading infrastructure across the country to connect more clean, affordable energy to the grid – moving it from where it’s generated to where it’s needed by UK homes and businesses.

There’s never been a better time to work in energy. It’s a time of opportunity and transformation! As a result of this, we're seeing unprecedented growth in our network and are looking to grow our Land Teams.

We're looking for a Land Officer to assist in the provision of an expert National land service, delivering and enabling the access needed for the essential maintenance activities of National Grid’s assets.

You'll be part of a diverse land team providing expert land rights services required for existing electrical assets for National Grid. This will be in accordance with current legislation and guidance, best practice and procedure, to ensure National Grid adheres to its licence obligations.

In this role you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to travelling to offices and project sites as required. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key accountabilities

  • Develop strategies from design stage and deliver access arrangements to allow implementation of capital and maintenance works, including managing and coordinating overhead line refurbishment projects.
  • Negotiate levels of compensation, agree reinstatement, negotiate terms for acquisition of additional land rights as required, ensuring value for money and National consistency and accurate budget management.
  • Manage key interfaces with internal and external stakeholders and local community engagement as required.
  • Management of Framework Contractors.
  • Be the first point of contact for internal/grantor/third party enquiries, issues and complaints for the team.
  • Support activities undertaken by the Grantor Relations team to ensure the accuracy of the electricity grantor databases.
  • Assist with reporting on programme, key milestone delivery, risk, contract and financial management on a regular basis.
  • Sharing lessons learnt and best practice across the wider land team to drive consistency across the portfolio and deliver continuous improvement.

About you

What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential. That’s why we look to recruit current – or potential – experts in their field. In this case, we’re looking for someone who has:

  • Knowledge and experience in land agency or agricultural liaison in another utility or land agency practice.
  • Good working knowledge of valuation principles and land compensation law.
  • Experience in project, programme, risk, contract and financial management, including accurate and timely customer reporting.
  • Ability to understand the wider planning, environmental and amenity issues affecting the above work type.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential, and the post holder must be a strong and effective team player.
  • Experience with negotiating with a wide range of external stakeholders from individual members of public, landowners, commercial establishments, contractors and developers to ensure the best outcomes.
  • Proven ability with all Microsoft Office products, SharePoint and mapping tools.
  • Desirable but not essential - degree qualified (or equivalent) in a related discipline and/or working towards AssocRICS or MRICS.

Don’t meet every single requirement? If you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might just be the right person for our growing business in this role or another one.

What you'll get

  • A competitive salary between £41,000 - £50,000 – dependent on capability.
  • Job requirement car.
  • An annual performance bonus.
  • 26 days annual leave (plus bank holidays).
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • A comprehensive internal training programme along with support for relevant external courses.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave - so long as it's relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to apps that support health, fitness and wellbeing.
