About the role

Support Surveyor - New Infrastructure

Location: Home Based, National (With office hubs in Leeds, Warwick and The Strand, London)

Great Britain’s electricity infrastructure is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

We are at the forefront of the biggest period of change in the electricity network since the 1960s to meet the demands of Net Zero; upgrading infrastructure across the country to connect more clean, affordable energy to the grid – moving it from where it’s generated to where it’s needed by UK homes and businesses.

There’s never been a better time to work in energy. It’s a time of opportunity and transformation! As a result of this, we're seeing unprecedented growth in our network and are looking to grow our Land Teams.

We're looking for a Support Surveyor to develop and deliver new infrastructure projects to help facilitate the Great Grid Upgrade which is the largest overhaul of the electricity grid in generations. Our infrastructure projects across England and Wales are helping to connect more renewable energy to your homes and businesses.

You'll be part of a diverse land team providing expert land rights and acquisitions services required for new electrical assets for National Grid. This will be in accordance with current legislation and guidance, best practice and procedure, to ensure National Grid adheres to its licence obligations.

In this role you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to travelling to offices and project sites as required. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key accountabilities

  • Support the Surveyors and Senior Surveyors with the delivery of all land rights and acquisitions for our new infrastructure projects from development to construction, including access to land, the acquisition of land, securing land rights, and the negotiation of compensation settlements.
  • Liaise with internal/external stakeholder, landowner and customers.
  • Procure and manage external resource to deliver required lands activities.
  • Support with the implementation of National Grid Lands Rights Strategy (and other supporting policies and procedures) in a transparent, credible, consistent and economic way.
  • Assist with project reporting on programme, key milestone delivery, risk, contract and financial management on a regular basis.
  • Sharing lessons learnt and best practice across the wider land team to drive consistency across the portfolio and deliver continuous improvement.

About you

What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential. That’s why we look to recruit current – or potential – experts in their field. In this case, we’re looking for someone who has:

  • Some experience and/or knowledge of delivering land activities for infrastructure projects including access to land, securing land rights, and the negotiation of compensation settlements.
  • Demonstrated skills in building positive relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Written and verbal communication & negotiating skills to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, with the ability to communicate concisely and effectively.
  • Some experience of working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to support overall project delivery.
  • Some experience of (or a willingness to learn) providing project and contract management services as part of delivering the acquisition of land and land rights projects.
  • Awareness of (or a willingness to learn) the legal and regulatory parameters that National Grid work within, including the range of statutory powers available, understanding how these then relate to the relevant project strategy and approach.
  • Awareness of (or a willingness to learn) of the consenting regimes and processes relevant to complex linear projects. This includes the Planning Act (2008) Development Consent Order and Compulsory Purchase Order processes and practice including the compensation code.
  • Desirable - degree qualified (or equivalent) in a related discipline and/or working towards AssocRICS or MRICS.

Don’t meet every single requirement? If you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might just be the right person for our growing business in this role or another one.

What you'll get

  • A competitive salary between £41,000 - £50,000 – dependent on capability.
  • Job requirement car.
  • An annual performance bonus.
  • 26 days annual leave (plus bank holidays).
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • A comprehensive internal training programme along with support for relevant external courses.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave - so long as it's relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to apps that support health, fitness and wellbeing.
