National Grid Ventures portfolio of electricity interconnectors allow zero-carbon electricity to flow efficiently between markets. They provide valuable flexibility for countries to import or export clean energy over long distances via sub-sea and land cables at the flick of a switch, strengthening security of supply and supporting affordability for consumers.
As a key member of the SHESQ team, within the UJV Interconnector portfolio, you'll provide the highest level of Safety, Health and Environmental management across our Interconnector Sites. You’ll lead on enhancing the Interconnectors operational SHE management arrangements, improvement initiatives and facilitating effective communication and the sharing of best practice with internal and external stakeholders across UJV Interconnectors.
With a curious mindset, you will be passionate about the Safety of our operational teams who work across our Interconnector operations, construction projects and other enabling projects.
In this role you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to travelling to our head office (Warwick) and Interconnector sites as required – mainly being Viking Link (Lincolnshire) and North Sea Link (Northumberland).
Key accountabilities
- Create a positive safety culture across our Locations by communicating, embedding and ensuring SHESQ procedural compliance and consistency within the UJV Operations teams.
- Lead on guidance and interpretation of Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions to staff in the business. Carry out Authorisation interviews for the Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions roles.
- Lead on all Safety, Health, Environment & Sustainability issues, including statutory compliance (PUWER, LOLER, CoSHH, etc.), using a high level of SHES knowledge.
- Undertaking audits as required, including Safety From the System works and Safety Authorisations.
- Lead and monitor the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Environmental Incident Reporting and Investigation processes, ensuring investigations are carried out in a timely manner; to acceptable standard; with appropriate actions and sharing of learning.
About you
What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential. That’s why we look to recruit experts in their field. In this case, we’re looking for someone who has a strong technical and operational background:
- Is a subject matter expert in Safety, Health and Environmental management including System Safety (Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions) specialism, within the electrical transmission system (or similar).
- Currently or previous authorisation as a Senior Authorised Person.
- Has knowledge and understanding of the roles within the Electricity Safety Rules/Instructions.
- Is a subject matter expert in safety management within electrical transmission systems which could include HVDC Convertor Stations, Substations, Cables and Overhead Lines (400kV-275kV-132kV systems).
- Has effective people management and communication skills, in a delivery environment across a range of staff across our locations.
- Is comfortable working with multiple stakeholders and collaboratively and innovatively within cross functional teams.
- Holds a minimum HNC or equivalent in a STEM discipline, preferably electrical engineering.
- Minimum of NEBOSH National Certificate or equivalent in a relevant topic is essential (e.g., Occupational Health & Safety, Health & Safety Management for Construction).
