About the role

Join us in our Mission to achieve NetZero

Do you want to work on the front line of the Electricity Transmission System on our high voltage network? Do you have a background in Power Systems? Then this could be the role for you.

The TNCC (Transmission National Control Centre) is truly on the front line of what we do. We have exciting opportunities in our Control Centre where you'll become part of the team responsible for the real-time operation of the national electricity transmission network.

Playing a pivotal role in ensuring that the transmission network is managed effectively, allowing timely delivery of planned work and responding effectively to faults on the system, you will implement the system outage plan, monitor site alarms, Operational and Safety switching activities, and provide operational assistance in the management of planned and unplanned power system events. You'll also spend some time outside the Control Room providing technical expertise across the business, and planning for the upcoming weeks.

You will be in an Operational and Safety critical role and you'll need to achieve the correct authorisations before being assigned responsibilities. We provide a bespoke training and authorisation programme, giving you the confidence and support needed to carry out this critical role.

These roles are based in the TNCC at our offices in Warwick and require you to work on a shift rota therefore attracting a shift allowance on top of base salary.

As a Control Person you would be required to work on a shift rota pattern (hours between 7am to 7pm and currently 1 weekend in 4) published well in advance to allow for work-life balance. This attracts a shift allowance of 10.4%. The TNCC operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; a Control Engineer is also required to work on a full shift rota with night shifts included thus would receive a higher shift allowance of 26%.

What you'll need

With a background in power systems or control rooms, and a good understanding of transmission network operation and analysis techniques, you will ideally have held a position as a Control Engineer, Distribution Network Operator (DNO) control room, or Senior Authorised Person (SAP) authorisation.

With knowledge of the main plant and protection/control systems used on the National Grid electricity system, you'll have a good understanding of the safety issues, legislation and all relevant procedures. You will be educated to HNC (or equivalent) level in a STEM-related subject or have equivalent experience and have the ability to work under pressure and remain calm. With good logical and analytical skills, you'll have a high attention to detail and situational awareness.

What's in it for you?

A competitive salary of £51,900 - £65,600 dependant on capability and experience. (Plus either 10.4% partial shift allowance or 26% full shift allowance)

You'll have 26 days annual leave, with the option to buy or sell holiday days. Things such as 26 weeks fully paid parental or adoption leave, and back-up care service are standard. Our generous double-matched
pension contribution scheme means your pension could be worth up to 18% of your salary and you'll have the option to purchase discounted National Grid shares.

On top of all of this we offer financial support for study and we are committed to your career development.
