Job Description

*Candidates must be permanent in the Investigator title.

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Shield and ID Unit is responsible for the production and distribution of photo identification cards for all members of the service, as well as certain categories of non-members of the Department. The Unit is also responsible for the maintenance of the Identification Card System and the acquisition and security of all identification cards, consumables and equipment for the System. The Shield and ID Unit is responsible for the acquisition, assignment, distribution, maintenance and security of all Department shields. Staff members assigned to the Unit are responsible for ensuring the authenticity of all Department shields and are tasked with the maintenance of the Shield Desk Application.

The Uniform Services Unit is responsible for the Retiree Clearance process and the issuing of the LEOSA HR218 card and Pistol Inquiry letter (Good Guy Letter) to Members of the Service that retire in good standing with the Department. The Unit also manages the Uniform Transportation Benefits Program. The Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Railroad, and the New York City Transit MetroCard Pass program each conduct Police Ride Programs which allow uniformed members of the service, in all ranks, to ride their trains without cost upon presentation of a police ride pass issued by the carrier concerned.

The Shield and ID Unit seeks a qualified Investigator to conduct Interstate Identification Index checks on all retirees requesting to update, renew or replace their retired identification card. Review Triple I check, retiree application, verify duty and pistol license status to ensure retiree meets Department guidelines and qualify to receive a retired identification card. Prepare and process identification cards for promotions, new hires, renewals, change of duty status. Verify and review paperwork (UF61, lost stolen report, agendas for new appointments and change of titles). Trouble shoot and conduct routine maintenance on ID card printers. Maintain Triple I logbook. Participate in various projects that require shields and ID cards such as, new hires, promotions, gun and shield day.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, and three years of satisfactory full-time
experience as an investigator evaluating credit worthiness, searching for assets, verifying information concerning education, experience, and other personal qualifications bearing upon character and fitness for employment; or performing investigations involving the research, compilation and/or location of evidence or information in order to build a case or uncover activities of a criminal, corrupt, unlawful or unethical nature; or

2. An associate degree from an accredited college or university or 60 semester credits from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory full time experience as described in “1” above; or

3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or

4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1”, “2”, or “3” above.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
