Job Description
The New York City Employees’ Retirement System is recruiting for one (1) Full-time Associate Retirement Benefits Examiner, Level 1 in the Survivor Benefits Unit within the Retirement and Pension Benefits Division. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Check forms/applications, and/or other related materials for completeness and accuracy.
- Review calculations for various types of cases, such as Active/Pension Lump sum, Single Life and Optional Benefits.
- Check, update and retrieve pensioners/members/beneficiary data and information from/into a variety of resources and computer systems (i.e. PROD, NBNF, SLFM and NYCEPAS).
- Review and/or perform a variety of administrative tasks such as payment verification, payroll certifications, typing letters, preparing documents for imaging, exporting scanned documents, creating a file for each case, and preparing various listings.
- Communicate, obtain, and provide information from members, agencies, beneficiaries, other NYCERS’ work units, and/or other retirement systems.
- Determine pensioners/members beneficiaries and benefits to be paid.
- Review and maintain cases including sort, transfer, pend and close items of the NYCEPAS tracking system daily.
- As directed, train new staff by orienting them to work activities and providing them with advice and guidance in accomplishing assigned work activities.
- Respond to call center requests, or direct inquiries to other staff for their response.
ASSOCIATE RETIREMENT BENEFITS - 40493
1. An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting and/or actuarial science and two years of satisfactory full-time experience performing mathematical, statistical, actuarial or accounting computations in one or more of the following: a) a retirement or employee benefits plan;
b) for customer service in a financial institution; and/or c) in a position requiring the application of law, rules and regulations and the use of statistical, actuarial or similar tables; or
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of the experience described in "1" above. Each 15 semester credits from an accredited college including at least 3 credits in the areas described in "1" above may be substituted for each 6 months of experience to a maximum of 2 years experience. All candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least 2 years of experience as described in "1" above.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to meet deadlines in a busy environment. - Prioritize assignments and pay attention to details. - Clear and proficient written and oral communication - Basic math skills, at least an intermediate level of Microsoft Excel, and proficient in Microsoft Word
