Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledge experts.

The Training and Development Division is seeking New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (NYS DCJS) certified General Topics Instructors to serve as part-time Instructors/Trainers. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Training Operations the selected candidate(s) will be responsible for the planning and delivery of classes related to the Academy’s recruit and in-service training programs including and not limited to new hire orientation and professional development training programs. The selected candidate will also be responsible for ensuring classes are delivered within the specifications of DOC polices and procedures, NYS DCJS guidelines, and the Municipal Police Training Council established curriculum on the Basic Course for Correction Officers. The instructors will perform appropriate in class assessments to determine whether training programs meet and achieve goals and objectives: selected candidates will provide guidance and assistance with the creation and revision of training lesson plans and other relevant training materials; make recommendations to the directors in order to obtain optimum efficiency in the utilization of staff, equipment and technology and other operating resources; and support the work of the division leadership team as needed. Any other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills

- Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) proficiency - Experience in a high-paced environment, with the ability to manage information and distribute appropriately - Ability to establish positive working relationships with multiple units and different levels of staff - Excellent writing, communication, inter-personal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills - The candidate must be well-organized, proactive, resourceful, flexible, and able to communicate with staff (at all levels) in a fast- paced environment, meet deadlines, and perform with a high level of professionalism.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required for this position within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
