ELECTRICAL MECHANIC
PUBLIC SAFTETY ADMINISTRATION

Starting Salary: $115,544.04
This position is open to current I.B.E.W. BIDDERS AND the PUBLIC. Only current City employees covered under the City’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with the I.B.E.W. INTERNATIONAL BROTHERHOOD OF ELECTRICAL WORKERS (Local 134) BARGAINING UNIT (BU 32) are considered BIDDERS and are eligible to bid. Qualified BIDDERS who properly submit a bid application will receive preference over any non-bidders.

Under supervision, performs journey-level electrical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical wiring systems and equipment found in city facilities and radio sites across the city. They also work within city radio shops and perform electrical work needed on radios/radio systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Reads diagrams, layouts, specifications, and work orders to assess work required and to determine the proper installation and repair method to use.
• Ensures adequate supplies of tools, equipment and materials are at work sites to complete jobs.
• Performs electrical installations and maintains and repairs electrical wiring and equipment.
• Installs and maintains conduits for telephone and electrical circuits and switchgear, and tests and replaces over-current devices.
• Services and maintains electronic equipment used in emergency communications including dispatch console and data radio control equipment.
• Tests and maintains telecommunications circuits to ensure proper systems operations.
• Installs, maintains, and performs bench repairs and optimization of portable and mobile radios and data terminals, automatic vehicle locator equipment, trunked radio systems, networking gear and related equipment.
• Uses testing equipment to inspect and test electrical installations and repair work for compliance with safety and building code requirements. Prepares work activity reports.
• May be assigned to spend significant portions of the working day at various remote radio equipment sites repairing and maintaining emergency communication systems and equipment.
Additional duties may be required for this position

Days: Monday-Friday
Hours: 06:00am-14:30pm
Qualifications
THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered electrical mechanic apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
• A valid state of Illinois driver’s license is required at the time of hire and must be maintained through the duration of employment
• Possession of FCC License for radios is required at the time of hire OR should be able to obtain within 6 months from the date of hire
NOTE: APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAM CERTIFICATE(S), PROFESSIONAL LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL CARDS, JOURNEYMAN CARD, RESUME AND A VALID STATE OF ILLINOIS DRIVER'S LICENSE MUST BE SUBMITTED AT THE TIME OF PROCESSING.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position does not require an interview.
This position requires applicants to successfully complete a written/skills assessment test. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been compiled and analyzed. Applicants who receive a passing score on the written test will be invited to complete a practical hands-on assessment. Applicants who receive a passing score on both the written test and the hands-on assessment will be hired in lottery/random order. If you are a bidder, you will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing at least one of the following:
• Previous professional work experience with radio installation, maintenance, and repair
• Previous professional work experience or education-based training in networking as it relates to computerized communication systems
• Previous Military Communications experience
• Previous HAM Radio experience.
• Previous networking engineering experience (CCST / CCNA / Network + or equivalent certification)
Working Conditions
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions
• Exposure to loud noise, fumes, or dust, oily or wet environment
• Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., electrical machinery)
• Work performed above or below ground level
• Work performed using scaffolds and ladders
Equipment
• Standard office equipment (e.g., telephone, printer, photocopier, fax machine, calculator)
• Hand tools (e.g., hammer, screwdriver, wrench, pliers)
• Power tools (e.g., cutting, bending, and threading machines)
• Personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, shoes, glasses, gloves, vest, pads)
• Testing and monitoring equipment (e.g., ammeters, oscilloscopes)
• Measuring tools (e.g., tape measure, ruler, calipers, measuring wheel)
• Ladders
Physical Requirements
• Substantial lifting (up to 50 pounds) is required
• Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time
• Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs
• Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or step stools
• Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment
• Ability to tolerate heights while working
