Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

Under the general supervision of the Plan Intake Supervisor (Counter 2 supervisor), Inspectional Services Department, the zoning analyst performs preliminary zoning reviews on all non-construction long-form permit applications as well as preliminary zoning reviews for permit applications assigned to the Accelerate Plans Review Team. They serve as the Division's liaison with the Planning Department and provide zoning code training for ISD staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct preliminary zoning reviews for non-construction long-form applications and certain fast-track team permit applications.
  • Act as the division's liaison to the City of Boston Planning Department on all zoning codes, changes, and updates.
  • Act as the division's liaison to the Zoning Board of Appeal.
  • Provide zoning code training to plans examiners, plans review techs, or other ISD staff requiring training.
  • In collaboration with the Communications Director, develop and maintain ISD public information materials on local zoning codes.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in a business, government, or nonprofit setting. A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred and may be substituted for up to two (2) of experience.
  • Ability to communicate the results of analyses in a clear and effective manner.
  • Thorough knowledge of local, state, and federal legal requirements applicable to planning, zoning, and land usage.
  • Familiarity with construction permitting software, including INFOR/Hansen and ProjectDox, is preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications, Google Suite, and Zoom.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese, and Vietnamese).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
