Overview:

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the position):

Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance, supervises the crews assigned to the general maintenance of trees under the jurisdiction of the Boston Parks & Recreation Dept. and does related work as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Directs foremen and contractors in supervising the maintenance of trees on City of Boston property throughout the city.
  • Responsible for identifying tree problems and recommending remedial action to be taken.
  • Confers with supervisor on major problems and recommends solutions.
  • Reviews the scheduling and progress of work performed by the foremen and crew assigned to the Park Department Tree Unit.
  • Requisitions and supervises the distribution of materials and supplies.
  • Inspects work to ensure that it is performed correctly and safely.
  • Checks daily work schedule and prepares reports.
  • Works with constituent services to ensure accuracy of database.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the technical aspects of tree maintenance, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of tree maintenance and the operation, maintenance, and management of tree-related equipment.
  • Ability to plan, supervise, and train tree maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to program tree maintenance activities.
  • Ability to identify trees and tree problems and recommend remedial action.
  • Ability to provide advice in purchasing tree maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, associates, contractors, administrators, and the general public.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

Must have a current valid Massachusetts Driver License (CDL license preferred).

Pre-employment drug test is required.

MUST BE AVAILABLE TO RESPOND TO EMERGENCIES 24 HRS. PER DAY/ SEVEN DAYS PER WEEK.

Employment Site: Working out of Franklin Park Service Yard.
