This is a provisional appointment.
Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Plans and Zoning of the Inspectional Services Department, the Plan Intake Supervisor directly supervises the processing of permit applications at Counter 2.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee long-form permit application(s) plan intake operations.
- Supervise permit technicians and administrative staff at Counter 2.
- Review of long-form permit applications and issuance of permits as required.
- Assist with zoning interpretations and customer service issues as well as provide preliminary zoning/building code reviews of proposed projects.
- Provide input to forecast permit revenue based on the knowledge of upcoming projects.
- Perform other work as requested.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the examination or interpretation of plans for the construction and alteration of buildings and structures, with special knowledge of architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering principles.
- An undergraduate degree with a major in engineering, architecture, or construction may be substituted for a maximum of two (2) years of the required experience on the basis of one (1) year of education to six (6) months of the required experience.
- Must have familiarity with City of Boston Zoning Laws and State Building Code, as well as the ability to review plans and interpret rules and regulations relating to construction and alteration of buildings and structures.
- Familiarity with construction permitting software, including INFOR/Hansen and ProjectDox, is preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships; to deal courteously with the general public.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
- A Multi-lingual candidate is also preferred.
- Certification as a Massachusetts Building Official is required within twelve (12) months of hire per 780CMR. Failure to meet the requirement will result in termination.
